Emotional eating has some triggers, which makes you hungry and that hunger is not the voice from your stomach it’s the voice of your emotional need. You eat to satiate your emotional appetite, not your physical appetite. Physical appetite is not sudden and instant like emotional hunger. When swayed by emotions you eat more that it is required and is wanted by the body.
So, know the triggers that make you hungry for no reason, actually reasons which are not reasonable. Emotional eating is not just linked with unpleasant feelings it can be linked with some triggers which are overwhelming, like if you want to celebrate or you have attained some goal. This can also make you eat more than it is required or is relevant.
Thus, when we will be able to recognize the triggers we can suppress that emotional urge to eat and afterwards being guilt ridden.
Here are Some Triggers that may Force You to Eat Excessively-
- Stress-
Ever noticed how hungry you become when you are under some stress? Our body will have that urgent craving to eat something that very moment, to satiate the hunger of our emotions but not the hunger of our body. As when there is chronic stress, a hormone named as Cortisol is produced in our body, this hormone triggers the urge for salty, sweet and highly fatty food that gives us pleasure and energy. Because of the excessive production of this hormone we tend to relieve ourselves with all pleasurable stuff.
2. To Curb Emotions-
Sometimes we eat to tame down some emotions, like anger, anxiety, guilt, stress, shame, resent or anything that gives distress to our mind. To stuff down those emotions and make us numb we divert our mind through eating and eating a lot than it is actually required.
3. Childhood Habits-
Go back to your childhood and collect those memories when you used to be rewarded when you got excellent results, or when you were sad you used to get those candies. This becomes a habit even when you have grown old. Nostalgia even makes you eat, to relish the same pleasure that you used to have before with your parents.
4. Social Pressures-
Just because people are eating a lot in front of you, you become nervous and eat a lot. That pressure of nervousness will make you eat more than your body urges for.
So, these were some triggers of emotional eating, you can suppress it only if you understand it.
